On Thursday 8th October 2015, Fellows exhibited it's current products as well as newly designed and developed CopaCure products in Sandwell.

The exhibition was attended by over 300 delegates from various market sectors and was focused on the new £430 million hospital to be built in Smethwick.

International Copper Association Ltd has commissioned York Health Economics Consortium, a global leader in healthcare-associated modelling, to develop a fully referenced cost-benefit model for hospital managers to illustrate the economic rationale of an antimicrobial copper intervention.

Their model is based on the cost of implementing a copper touch surface installation and the balancing cost savings resulting from reduced infection rates. This document details a worked example using actual screenshots from the software.

copacure_logo_color_219px.pngAntimicrobial copper offers a new approach to infection control – and makes a material difference to well-being and finance. Completely safe to humans, copper is very effective against bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi.

There is abundant evidence that touch surfaces play a significant role in the spread of infection, and that copper is an effective and appropriate self-disinfecting material for touch surface items.

The cost-effectiveness of copper, researched by York Health Economics Consortium, is staggering: payback in under 2 months for a 20 bed ICU in the UK, plus significant long-term savings and freed-up beds.

CopaCu+re represents a new way of thinking: employing an engineering material with intrinsic antimicrobial properties to help protect public health.

Fixtures, fittings and other CopaCu+re touch surfaces made from antimicrobial copper continuously kill pathogenic microbes, between touches and between cleans, helping to break the chain of infection and providing an additional weapon in the fight against healthcare-associated infections.

Fellows offer a wide range of items in antimicrobial copper, available under the CopaCu+re brand. These products are made and marketed in accordance with the Cu+ stewardship scheme managed by the Copper Development Association and International Copper Alliance.

Please note: healthcare infections are a multifaceted issue; antimicrobial copper is a supplement to, not a substitute for, hand hygiene and cleaning.

Antimicrobial Efficacy

Three main characteristics make Antimicrobial Copper the most effective touch surface material:

Continuously kills microbes

  • Antimicrobial efficacy proven under typical indoor conditions
  • Kills the microbes that cause infections, between touches and between cleans
  • The only solid metal touch surface approved by US Environmental Protection Agency

Never wears out

  • Continuous and ongoing antimicrobial action
  • Remains effective even after repeated wet and dry abrasion and re-contamination
  • Natural oxidation does not impair efficacy

Safe to use

  • Not harmful to people or the environment.
  • Intrinsically antimicrobial: no nanotechnology, chemicals or coatings
  • Completely recyclable

Results from Clinical Trials

Clinical trials of copper touch surfaces in busy hospital environments around the world show:

  • microbial bioburden reduced by over 80% on copper
  • 58% fewer HCAIs among ICU patients who stayed in rooms fitted with copper surfaces

Key Properties of Copper Touch Surfaces:

  • Rapidly self-disinfecting - kills pathogens, viruses, yeasts & fungi
  • Works 24/7, between touches and between cleans
  • Works whether wet or dry (even faster when dry)
  • Safe and ecologically sound, with no coatings or nanotechnology
  • Compatible with standard cleaning processes & detergents
  • Durable materials, without coatings or surface treatments
  • Antimicrobial protection never wears out
Copper dissolves from surface, causing cell damage. Cell ruptures & contents leak out onto copper surface. Copper ions induce generation of oxidative stress, causing further cell damage. The bacterial DNA is degraded, making it extremely unlikely that res
